Football Pitch Construction in the UAE
A football pitch is 90% groundworks. The turf is what people see, but the sub-base, the falls and the drainage are what decide whether the pitch plays properly in year eight. Raymond Sport builds complete football pitches across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE — from 5-a-side cages to full-size FIFA Quality installations — with the civils, turf, fencing, goals and floodlighting under one contract. Building sports facilities here since 1987.
Turnkey Football Pitch Construction, Start to Finish
Most of what goes wrong on a football pitch happens before the turf arrives. Ten stages, one contract — and four of them are complete before anything green reaches the site.
| Stage | Scope item | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Site Survey & Feasibility | Levels, existing ground conditions, drainage outfall and orientation. What size pitch the site will actually take, established before anything is promised. |
| 02 | Design & Specification | Pitch size and format, turf system, pile height, infill, shock pad, fencing, goals and lighting — issued as drawings and a written schedule, not a one-line quotation. |
| 03 | Approvals Support | Material submittals, method statements and compliance documentation prepared for consultant and authority review. |
| 04 | Critical Stage Earthworks & Sub-Base |
Excavation and compacted aggregate sub-base laid to falls. This is the stage that determines pitch life — a pitch built on a poor base will look perfect for two seasons and then never drain properly again. |
| 05 | Drainage | Permeable build-up with laterals and outfall, sized for the site. Standing water ruins both the surface and the play, and it is the single most common defect we are called in to correct. |
| 06 | Shock Pad | E-layer or prefabricated shock pad where the specification requires it — for shock absorption, player safety and longer turf life above it. |
| 07 | Turf Installation | Rolled, seamed and inlaid line marking, then infilled with sand and rubber or cork to the manufacturer's specified rates and brushed in. |
| 08 | Fencing, Goals & Equipment | Perimeter fencing or full cage, rebound boards, goals, nets, dugouts and spectator provision. |
| 09 | Floodlighting | LED floodlighting designed, installed and commissioned, with lux and uniformity measured on site and reported. |
| 10 | Handover & Warranty | Snag list closed, as-built documentation, maintenance schedule and full warranty pack issued at handover. |
Single point of responsibility. One contract, one team, one company accountable — from sub-base to final line.
Football Pitch Sizes — 5-a-Side to Full Size
Most UAE sites cannot fit a full-size pitch, and most clients do not need one. The question is what the plot will properly take — and that is the first thing we establish at survey.
| Format | Typical playing area | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 5-a-side | 25–42m × 15–25mApproximate | Villas, rooftops, community facilities, commercial pitch operators |
| 7-a-side | 55–65m × 37–45mApproximate | Schools, academies, community clubs |
| 9-a-side | 70–80m × 45–55mApproximate | Youth academies and schools |
| 11-a-side — Standard | 90–120m × 45–90m | Clubs, schools, community stadiums |
| 11-a-side — International | 100–110m × 64–75m | Competition and federation venues |
Allow additional space beyond the playing area for run-off, perimeter fencing, dugouts and access. The plot you need is always larger than the pitch you get.
Verify before you specify. 5-a-side, 7-a-side and 9-a-side dimensions vary by federation and by competition — the figures above are typical ranges, not rules. Confirm the requirement for your intended level of play. Raymond Sport issues a compliance schedule with every proposal.
If the pitch is being built to rent by the hour, format drives revenue. Two 5-a-side pitches on the footprint of one 7-a-side will usually out-earn the larger pitch — more bookable slots, more simultaneous games, and a format that fills more easily on a weekday evening. We will tell you that at survey stage, before you commit to a layout.
FIFA Quality and FIFA Quality Pro — What the Marks Actually Mean
Every supplier in this market says "FIFA approved". Very few explain what that means, and the two marks are not interchangeable — choosing the wrong one costs you either money or service life.
| Consideration | FIFA Quality Community & club | FIFA Quality Pro Elite competition |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | High-volume community and club use | Elite and professional competition |
| Priority | Durability and longevity under heavy daily play | Playing performance to professional standard |
| Typical venue | Schools, academies, community pitches, commercial operators | Professional clubs and competition stadiums |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Right for most UAE projects | Yes — usually The correct specification for the large majority of schools, academies and community pitches in this region. |
Only where competition standard is genuinely required. Specifying it otherwise adds cost without adding usable life. |
What actually gets tested. The FIFA Quality Programme for Football Turf assesses how the surface interacts with both the ball and the player. Four measurements do most of the work — and they are what separate a certified football system from artificial grass that merely looks green.
Ball Roll
How far the ball travels across the surface — whether the pitch plays fast or slow.
Ball Rebound
How the ball bounces off the surface, and whether it behaves as players expect.
Shock Absorption
How much impact the system takes out of a landing — the player-protection measure.
Rotational Resistance
How the surface grips a twisting boot. Too little and players slip; too much and knees take the load.
Certification is awarded to a specific turf system installed to specification and tested on site — not to a brand in general. A supplier can hold a certificate for one product and quote you another. Ask any contractor, including us, for the FIFA Quality Programme test certificate covering the actual system they are proposing for your pitch.
The Turf System — What We Specify and Why
A football surface is a system, not a carpet. Seven decisions determine how it plays, how long it lasts and how hot it gets — and we make every one of them deliberately.
| Component | What we specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Yarn type | Monofilament | Better resilience and ball behaviour than fibrillated under heavy use |
| Pile height | Typically 40–60mm | Shorter for 5-a-side and high-wear areas; longer for full-size play |
| Backing | Permeable | Water must leave the surface, not sit in it |
| Infill | Silica sand plus rubber or cork | Sand stabilises the pile; the top layer provides performance and shock absorption |
| Shock pad | E-layer or prefabricated | Shock absorption and player protection — and it extends the life of the turf above it |
| UV treatment | UV-stabilised yarn | Non-negotiable in the Gulf |
| Line marking | Inlaid, not painted | Painted lines wear off within seasons; inlaid lines last the life of the turf |
Rubber crumb is the established option and performs well. Cork and TPE alternatives run cooler in direct sun, which is a genuine consideration on an unshaded UAE pitch used through the afternoon. They cost more. Whether that trade-off is worth it depends on when your pitch will actually be played — we will talk you through it rather than defaulting to whatever is cheapest.
Football Pitch Floodlighting
Pitch lighting is usually the first thing cut when a budget tightens. On a UAE pitch, it is the last thing that should be.
In the UAE, floodlighting is not an upgrade — it is what makes the pitch usable. Most play happens after sunset for much of the year, and an unlit pitch loses the majority of its bookable hours. For a commercial operator that is not a lighting decision; it is a revenue decision.
| Level of play | Illuminance target | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| Recreational / community | 200–300 lux | Community pitches, school facilities, commercial 5-a-side |
| Club and training | 300–500 lux | Clubs, academies and universities |
| Competition | 500 lux and above | League and federation-affiliated venues |
| Broadcast | Per event requirement | Televised matches, with flicker and colour rendering set by the broadcaster |
Pole Positions
Set with the fence line
Coordinated with fencing and run-off at design stage, so foundations are not fighting the perimeter on site.
Spill Light
Controlled at the boundary
Critical where pitches sit close to residential buildings — a common approvals issue on community and rooftop sites.
Uniformity
Measured, not assumed
A full-size pitch is a large area to light evenly. Corners and touchlines are where uniformity fails, so that is where we measure.
How we design it. Floodlighting is designed to EN 12193 classes, modelled before installation, and measured at commissioning — lux and uniformity reported, not assumed from the datasheet. Confirm the exact requirement with the relevant federation for any pitch intended to host sanctioned competition.
Football Pitch Maintenance and Turf Replacement
Artificial turf is low maintenance, not zero maintenance. Brushing and infill are what decide whether your pitch reaches eight years or twelve — and both are cheap compared with what they protect.
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Brush to redistribute infill and keep the pile upright; remove debris from the surface. |
| Monthly | Check infill depth and top up — especially in goalmouths and high-wear zones, where displacement is fastest. |
| Quarterly | Decompact the infill; inspect seams, line markings and fencing. |
| Annually | Deep clean, full seam and infill inspection, and a drainage check before it becomes a problem. |
| Replacement Due Every 8–10 Years |
Turf replacement — the base and drainage usually remain serviceable. |
UAE conditions
Turf replacement is not a rebuild. If the sub-base and drainage were built correctly, replacing the carpet and infill costs a fraction of a new pitch — and the pitch is back in play far sooner. Most UAE pitches built before 2018 are now at or approaching that point. If yours is fading, flattening or holding water, it is worth knowing which of those problems is the turf and which is the base underneath it.

Football Pitch Construction: Frequently Asked Questions
The questions clients ask us most often before building a new pitch or replacing the turf on an existing one.
What size is a football pitch?
A standard 11-a-side pitch is 90–120m long by 45–90m wide, with international matches played on 100–110m × 64–75m. Smaller formats are far more common on UAE sites: 7-a-side pitches are typically around 55–65m × 37–45m, and 5-a-side around 25–42m × 15–25m. Confirm the exact requirement for your level of play.
How long does it take to build a football pitch in the UAE?
Allow 8–14 weeks on site for a full-size pitch including earthworks, drainage and turf, assuming approvals and materials are in place. A 5-a-side pitch on an existing sound base can be considerably faster. Groundworks are the variable — the turf itself goes down quickly.
What is the difference between FIFA Quality and FIFA Quality Pro?
FIFA Quality prioritises durability and longevity for high-volume community and club use. FIFA Quality Pro prioritises playing performance for elite competition. Quality is the right specification for most UAE schools, academies and community pitches; Quality Pro is for venues that genuinely need competition standard.
How long does football turf last in the UAE?
Typically 8–10 years, depending on playing hours, maintenance and UV exposure. Regular brushing and infill top-up make a material difference. Poorly maintained pitches degrade considerably faster.
Can you replace the turf without rebuilding the whole pitch?
Usually, yes. If the sub-base and drainage were built correctly, Raymond Sport lifts the old carpet, assesses and corrects the base where needed, and installs a new system. It costs a fraction of a new pitch and returns the pitch to play far sooner.
Do I need a shock pad under football turf?
It depends on the specification and the level of play. A shock pad improves shock absorption, helps meet performance criteria, and typically extends the life of the turf above it. We will tell you where it is genuinely worth the cost and where it is not.
Is artificial turf too hot for UAE summers?
Surface temperature is a real consideration on any unshaded pitch. Infill choice affects it — cork and TPE run cooler than rubber crumb — and shading and irrigation systems are options worth discussing at design stage. We would rather raise it early than have you discover it in July.
Do you build football pitches outside the UAE?
Yes. We deliver across the GCC, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait.
