No joins, no edges to lift, no tiles to work loose. On a surface used by running children, that is a genuine safety difference — and the main reason wet pour is specified over rubber tiles for larger areas.
It Drains
The surface is porous — water passes straight through to the substrate below. That matters both for washing the surface down and for the rare but heavy UAE rainfall that leaves a solid surface underwater.
Critical Fall Height — The Number That Sets Your Specification
This is the part most quotations skip, and it is the only part that actually determines whether your surfacing is compliant. Everything else — colour, graphics, price — follows from it.
Critical fall height (CFH) is the maximum height from which a fall onto the surface will not cause a life-threatening head injury, measured under EN 1177. Every piece of play equipment has a free height of fall — and the surfacing beneath it must have a CFH equal to or greater than that figure.

These are indicative figures only. Critical fall height is a property of a specific tested system — the granule, the binder, the base layer and the substrate together — and is certified by test, not calculated from thickness. Always confirm against the EN 1177 test certificate for the exact system being installed. Raymond Sport supplies that certificate with every proposal.
Anyone quoting you a rate per square metre without asking about your equipment heights is quoting a surface, not a compliant playground. The thickness is the price, and the thickness comes from the equipment — which is why our first question is always what the children will be climbing on.
Compliance — What the Authorities Actually Require
Playground surfacing in the UAE is a regulated item, not a finish. Two European standards govern it, and three UAE authorities check it — and for schools, one of them is the education regulator.

The Binder Question — Why UAE Playgrounds Fade
Two playgrounds installed on the same day can look completely different after two summers. The difference is usually the binder — and it is almost never discussed at quotation stage, because the cheaper option is invisible on day one.

Aromatic binder is not defective. It is a cost decision, and it is the standard specification in much of the world. In UAE sun, on a bright multi-coloured play surface, it is usually the wrong one — the colour is the entire point of a children's playground, and a yellowed surface looks tired years before it is actually worn out.

Largest BuyerThe largest EPDM buyer in the UAE, and the most regulated. Surfacing has to meet EN 1177 for the equipment installed, carry documentation for KHDA and municipal review, and survive several hundred children a day. Play markings, learning graphics and running tracks can be inlaid directly into the surface.
Parks & Community
Municipal and developer-led play areas. Larger areas, higher fall heights from bigger equipment, and a specification driven by durability and colour retention over a long service life.

Graphics and markings are laid as the full depth of the wear layer — the colour goes right through, it is not a coating on top. So they do not wear off, peel or need repainting. A hopscotch grid poured into the surface is still there, and still bright, long after a painted one has scuffed away.

High temperatures and humidity affect the cure of the polyurethane binder. The surface can skin, blister or cure unevenly if it is poured in the wrong conditions or to the wrong programme. We plan around it — and you should be wary of anyone who tells you it makes no difference.
Maintenance and Lifespan
Wet pour asks very little. What it needs is drainage kept clear and wear watched at the points where it always happens first — the slide exit, the swing landing, the gate.

A correctly specified and installed wet pour surface should give many years of service, with wear concentrated at predictable points — slide exits, swing landings and gate thresholds. Those areas can be repaired locally rather than replacing the whole surface, which keeps the cost of ownership low.
Because wet pour is poured, it can be patched. Colour matching on an aged surface is never perfect — and a surface laid with a fading aromatic binder will have drifted from its original shade, so the patch stands out more. It is one more argument for a UV-stable binder from the start.

What is EPDM playground flooring?
A seamless rubber safety surface, poured and trowelled on site in two layers — a shock-absorbing SBR base and a coloured EPDM wear layer, both bound in polyurethane. It cures into a continuous, porous surface with no joins or trip edges, and it is the standard safety surfacing for playgrounds worldwide.
How thick does playground flooring need to be?
It depends entirely on the equipment above it. The surfacing must have a critical fall height, tested to EN 1177, equal to or greater than the free height of fall of the tallest equipment. As a rough guide that ranges from around 20–25mm for a 1m fall height up to 100mm or more above 3m — but the figure must come from the tested system's certificate, not a rule of thumb.

Why do playground surfaces fade in the UAE?
Usually the binder. Aromatic polyurethane binder is cheaper but degrades under UV, ambering and dulling the colours. Aliphatic binder is UV-stable and holds colour far longer. On an exposed outdoor playground in this climate, the difference becomes visible within a couple of summers.
How much does EPDM flooring cost per square metre in the UAE?
It depends on thickness, and thickness depends on your equipment fall heights — so a rate quoted without that information is not a real price. Colour, graphics, binder type and substrate condition also affect it. We price against a drawn specification and a thickness schedule, not a blanket rate per square metre.
Can EPDM flooring be repaired?
Yes. Because it is poured rather than laid, damaged or worn areas can be cut out and re-poured in sections. Colour matching on an aged surface is never exact, which is one more reason to specify a UV-stable binder at the outset.
Can you install EPDM over an existing surface?
Often, yes. If the existing concrete or asphalt is sound, level and drains properly, wet pour can be laid over it. If it is cracked, uneven or holds water, it needs correcting first — wet pour follows the base beneath it and will not disguise a bad one.
